History

The history of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) dates back to 1913, when it was first founded as Electric and Mechanics Section of the Shanghai College of Technology. Over the past century, the School has produced tens of thousands of alumni, as scientists, engineers, educators, statesmen and entrepreneurs, always make outstanding contributions to the innovation of science and technology, and the development of the society.

1913The Mechanical Engineering Branch was founded.
1937The Industrial Machinery Branch was renamed as Power Machinery Branch.
1942The Aeronautic Engineering was founded and later in 1952 it was merged to the East-China College of Aeronautic Engineering.
1958The Nuclear Science Specialty was set up.
1959 Jiao Tong University was divided into Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi’an Jiao Tong University, and part of the department of Mechanical Engineering moved to Xi’an Jiao Tong University.
1996The Industrial Engineering Specialty was set up and in 1997 it became the Industrial Engineering Department.
1997On basis of the former Mechanical Engineering Department and the former Power Engineering Department, two schools were established namely the School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Power and Energy Engineering.
2002The School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Power and Energy Engineering were merged as the School of Mechanical Engineering.
2013The School of Mechanical Engineering celebrates its 100th anniversary.
