Biography
Professor Eileen Yu holds a Chair of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Southampton. After obtained her PhD from Newcastle University pioneering on the development of direct methanol alkaline fuel cells, she worked as a research fellow at Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems, Germany before she returned to Newcastle University to take a prestigious EPSRC Research Fellowship (Life Science Interface). This fellowship enabled her to extend her research into the biosciences, from which she has developed an interdisciplinary research profile. She has a wide range of experience in various fields in electrochemical and bioelectrochemical systems for energy, environmental and biomedical applications. She has led several multi-million pounds interdisciplinary projects funded by various funding organisations.
Abstract
This report will demonstrate microbial electrochemical technologies for sustainable resource recovery. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) treated biodiesel wastewater (glycerol-rich, initial COD 20,900 ppm), achieving 86% COD removal. Diluted glycerol wastewater (140 ppm glycerol) enhanced microbial electrosynthesis (MES), converting CO2 primarily to acetate (3840 ppm max, 284.5 ppm/day rate) plus other organics (propionate, formate, etc.). Furthermore, a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) with biological electrodes simultaneously treated wastewater and produced green hydrogen (14 L/m2 cathode/day), requiring only 2/3 external energy due to bioanode contribution. These integrated systems enable concurrent wastewater treatment, CO2 utilization, and renewable hydrogen/chemical production.
